Hummers, Cartel, Anchor Dive Squeak By

One run decided all three contests in the Bob Owen Slow Pitch Softball League Thursday, making it easily the most competitive night of softball the league has seen in some time.

Hummers 7, Dirty Dozen 6

The defending champion National Guard Hummers, who have looked rather ordinary this season, got a much-needed victory in game one on Thursday, edging the Dirty Dozen 7-6. Although they outhit the Dozen 15-9, the Guardsmen’s three errors helped keep the score close.

It was the Hummers with seven runs on 15 hits and three errors while the Dirty Dozen finished with six runs on nine hits while also committing three errors. Leonard Frett got the win on the hill for the Hummers and Rod Graci got the loss. Top batters for the Hummers were Kai Schjang and Sylvester Blake, both 2 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs. For the Dirty Dozen, Jason Helima was 3 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs.

Cartel 18, Wyatt Heat 17

Game two saw the Cartel broke through with their first win of the season, dousing the powerful Heat, 18-17. It was the Cartel with 18 runs on 19 hits and two errors while the Heat finished with 17 runs on 16 hits and three errors. James Smith got the win on the hill for the Cartel while Dexter Desouza got the loss.

The Cartel were led offensively by Kenneth Milligan, 3 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs and Smith, 2 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs. For the Heat, Thomas Corcino was 3 for 4 with two home runs and two RBIs and Max Velasquez was 2 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs.

Anchor Dive 21, Speak the Word 20

In the late game, Anchor Dive silenced Speak the Word Ministries 21-20 in a slugfest thriller. Both teams exhausted their allotted six home runs early, and in the end the game came down to keeping the ball in the park with base hits. Anchor Dive was able to be just a little bit better in that regard and was able to pull out the one run victory.

It was Anchor Dive with 21 runs on 19 hits and two errors, while Speak the Word finished with 20 runs on 17 hits while committing three errors. Edwin Sankitts got the win on the hill and Gabriel Jagrup took the loss. Top batters for the winners were Juan Burgos, 4 for 4 with three home runs and four RBIs, and Carmelo Torres, 4 for 5 with two home runs and seven RBIs. For Speak the Word, Freddy Clarke was 3 for 5 with two home runs and three RBIs; Dexter Skepple was 4 for 5 with a home run and three RBIs.
