St. Thomas sailor Thomas Barrows, as part of Team Extreme, won the U.S. Team Racing Championship held over the weekend in Sippican Harbor, Mass.
Team Extreme was led by Stuart McNay and consists of former and current Yale University sailors. Barrows was an All-American sailor for Yale in 2007, 2008 and 2009.
U.S. Sailing reported that Team Extreme worked its way to the finals through competition with 15 other teams. Although almost 200 races were sailed in the event, the championship was not determined until the last race.
Team Extreme and defending three-time champions Team Silver Panda had each won two races of the best-of-five finals. With a win in the final race, Team Extreme brought the three-year winning streak of the New York Yacht Club’s Silver Panda to a close, winning the George R. Hinman Trophy, becoming the U.S. Team Racing Champions.
