Cobras Keep JFF Winless with 8-7 Victory

Cobra ace Angel Rosa turned in a strong performance against Just For Fun.Defending champions Just for Fun remain the only winless team in the Quarren Schjang 40 Plus Softball League after suffering their third straight loss, 8-7, to the Cobras on Sunday at the Renholdt Jackson Sport Complex. The Cobras, aided by three JFF errors, got five runs in the fifth to take the lead for good after trailing 4-3 entering the inning.

Batting first, JFF got on the board with one run in the top of the first inning on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Kai Schjang to take the early lead. Dario Linares’ RBI double in the bottom of the inning tied the game at one.

After a scoreless second, JFF scored three runs in the top of the third on a two-run home run off the bat of Schjang and an RBI single by Eustace Davis to go up 4-1. The Cobras answered with two runs on an RBI single by Reuben Mercardo and an RBI double by Carmelo Torres to cut the lead to one at 4-3.

The Cobras’ starting pitcher, Angel Rosa, would then keep JFF off the board over the next three innings. His team, meanwhile, took over the game in the bottom of the fifth, scoring five runs on a three-run, inside-the-park home run by Torres and — uncharacteristically — three errors by the defending champs to lead 8-4 after five completed innings. The Cobras did not score again, but their eight runs would prove to be just enough.

After being held scoreless over the last three innings, JFF came to bat in the top of the seventh facing a four-run deficit, trailing 8-4. Never saying die, the defending champs put a brief scare in the Cobras, rallying for three runs in the top of the seventh, but it just wasn’t enough. They scored three runs on an RBI single by Sylvester Blake and Reuben Molloy and a sac fly off the bat of Davis.

Rosa got the win on the hill for the Cobras, while Mario Ortiz got the loss for JFF. Top batters for the Cobras were Torres, 3 for 3 with a home run and four RBIs, and Mercardo and Linares, both 1 for 3 with an RBI.

For JFF, Schjang went 1 for 2 with a home run and three RBIs, Davis went 1 for 3 with two RBIs, and Real Sackey went 2 for 4.
