Brief: Gun License Renewal Amnesty In Last Days

March 27, 2009 — Only a few days remain for Virgin Islands residents to take advantage of the Firearms License Renewal Amnesty program that began Jan. 19 and will end March 31.
Under the program, anyone who has a firearm and has not renewed the license can come into the Firearms Bureau and renew without fear of repercussion or penalty. The usual late fee will be waived in some instances.
Any person with unregistered firearms can have their firearms registered if they meet the qualifications during the amnesty. After the program ends, anyone found with unregistered firearms will be in violation and might lose their firearms licenses privileges. They might also be prosecuted.
No first time application will be accepted during this period.
The Firearms Bureau is also in the process of updating firearms records. Families of gun owners who have died and people who previously stored their firearms with the Bureau are asked to contact Karen Stout, supervisor of the St. Croix Firearms Bureau, at 778-2211 ext. 6058 or Elfreda Robinson, supervisor of the St. Thomas Firearms Bureau at 774-2211 extension 5519.
