CCT Presents Comedy 'ART'

March 19, 2009 – The Caribbean Community Theatre presents the comedy "ART" by French playwright Yasmina Reza, translated by Christopher Hampton. There will be six performances at 8 p.m., on Fridays and Saturdays, March 20-21, 27-28, and April 3-4. There will also be a matinee at 4 p.m., on Sunday, March 29. It has been directed by Tom Ziegler, and stars Charles Braslow, Fred Handleman and Bruce Spector.
"Art" explores the friendship of three guys who really shouldn't be friends. Serge is pompous. Ivan is neurotic. Marc is a seething with aggression. But these men are friends, for reasons that are subtle and ambiguous, like the whitish lines on the all-white painting that sends them over the brink.
The play's director, Tom Ziegler, is a professional playwright with two off-Broadway productions to his credit. New to the island, Ziegler said he thought Yasmina Reza's play would be perfect for St. Croix. "I've never lived anywhere," he said, "with more artists, more art galleries and, obviously, more art aficionados than here. However, I should point out that the play is less about the art of painting, and more about the art of friendship."
'ART' won the Olivier Award in London, the Tony Award in New York, and has been translated into more than 30 languages. "…wildly funny, naughtily provocative…" – The New York Post. "…Reza is a fiendishly clever writer… 'ART' sounds like a marriage of Moliere and Woody Allen…" – Newsweek. "…classic comedy, period." – London Times.
All performances will be at the Caribbean Community Theatre, No. 18 Estate Orange Grove, Christiansted, St. Croix. Tickets will be sold at the door: $15 for adults; $8 for students. No reservations accepted; arrive early for best seating. No children under age 13 will be admitted.
This production is jointly supported by a grant from the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts in Washington, D.C.
