Beagles Leads Little Boys to One-Up Lead After First Leg of Mongoose Cup

March 9, 2009 — Captain John Beagles led from the front as he and Burt Shepp beat Dem Boys captain Brad Thomas and John Smith 3-1 in the opening match to lead the Carambola Little Boys to a one-up lead, at 3 1/2 to 2 1/2, at the completion of the first leg of the Mongoose Cup contested at the picturesque Buccaneer Golf Club and Resort.
For the most part the matches were very closely contested, with several coming down to the final hole, but in the end the Little Boys were just a little bit better during the first weekend of the competition.
The course played exceptionally difficult on Saturday as high winds forced some interesting shot-making. However, things were equally tough for both teams, and they both turned in some pretty good performances despite the hardships.
"The high winds made for some very difficult yet rewarding play, mostly for those able to keep their shots in play," Beagles said. "However, we all survived. I think the outcome displayed that the teams are very evenly matched. Even though this is a rivalry, at the end of the round we were all conversing and laughing with or at each other. We look forward to play next Saturday. I expect that our opponents will have equal desire to put on their best performance. It is our hope to do the same. If not, we should be able to fake it."
Dem Boys Captain Thomas also thought his team played well despite finding themselves one down after the opening leg.
"We had to battle hard all day against the weather conditions and the opposition, who represented themselves quite well today," he said. "We now have to make sure we can go to their home course and return the favor. We will be playing for the outright victory next week, because in the words of Coach Duffy Daugherty, 'A tie is like kissing your sister,' and a tie would also means that they would have they retained the cup."
The action now moves to the Little Boys home course next weekend at the much longer, more challenging Carambola Golf Club.
The overall match play results:
— John Beagles/Burt Shepp (Little Boys) beat Brad Thomas and John Smith (Dem Boys) 3 and 1;
— Arthur Epstein/Rob Monokian (Little Boys) halved with Andy Galiber/Eddie Lavarini (Dem Boys);
— Jim Kasin/Bobby Goldman (Little Boys) beat Rich Carey/Rafa Bonnet (Dem Boys) 2 and 1;
— Tony Dizon/Rich Thompson (Little Boys) halved with Keith Krilow/Bob Morgan (Dem Boys);
— Ken Croney/Gary (Dem Boys) beat Gary SurDyke/Bob Leroux (Little Boys) 2 up; and
— Phil Glengary/Frank Lange (Little Boys) halved with Max Blum/Dave Davis (Dem Boys).
