March 4, 2009 – Gov. John P. deJongh, Jr. has proclaimed March 2009 as "Virgin Islands History Month" in the territory. The people of the United States Virgin Islands of various origins, backgrounds, races, ethnicities, colors, beliefs and religions throughout history, as individuals and groups, have and continue to contribute nationally, internationally and globally, in a degree out of proportion to the population and geographic size of the Virgin Islands, to the progress and enrichment of humanity.
It is most fitting, proper and appropriate that knowledge of these achievements and contributions to humankind be known to both U.S. Virgin Islanders and all others in the global community. This will be achieved by commemorating the great events that have shaped the history and culture of this territory, and by honoring and paying tribute to the heroes and heroines of past and present, who have contributed to the betterment of the lives of U.S. Virgin Islanders and others through the ages.
The observation of every March as Virgin Islands History Month will serve as a catalyst to instill a sense of pride, loyalty, love, devotion and respect especially in our youth, the future leaders of tomorrow. Let us reflect and pay tribute to the heritage, legacy and rich culture that allows all Virgin Islanders on-island or abroad, to enjoy a deep sense of humility and pride.
