Idle Wishes for 2009

Jan. 1, 2009 — Idle, the Source mascot, was about to fall out of his seagrape tree from sheer tedium when suddenly on Nov. 4 everything changed. With all the shifts in power and perception, he had to spend the last month and a half trying to figure out what’s now in and what’s out.
Here’s what he’s come up with:
Ennui Is out – Hope is in for 2009.
Black intelligence is in, calling it "acting white" is out.
Complaining about "those people" is out, spending time with "those people" is in.
Tuna fish sandwiches and books are in, candy and cheap plastic toys from China are out.
Horn honking is out, mufflers are in.
Embezzlement is out, going to jail for it is in.
Fossil fuel is out, solar and wind energy are in.
Complaining about "negative news" is out, is out, making "positive news" is in.
Supporting local farmers is in, eating fast food is out.
Preserving our coral reefs is in, ravaging our sea floor is out.
Protecting our pristine coastlines is in, wanton development is out.
Recycling is in, littering is out.
Green shopping bags are in, plastic bags are out.
Music blasting from boom cars is out, respect for your neighbor's eardrums is in.
Joking about potholes and other chronic government pitfalls is out, fixing them is in
Prejudging people is out, respecting one another — regardless of sexual orientation, color, religion — is in.
Moose shooters are out. Hoops shooters are in.
Trickle-down economics is out. Making sure everyone gets a fair chance
is in.
Spanking is out. "Time out" is in.
Health care rationed by wealth is out, health care apportioned by need
is in.
Hurricanes are out. Gentle trade winds are in.
FEMA tarps are out. Solar panels are in.
Government workers who work are in, slackers are out.
Supporting the humane treatment of animals is in, dog fighting and all forms of animal cruelty are out.
Using corporate funds to stock your wine cellar is out, using corporate funds to maintain needed equipment is in.
Sucking your teeth is out, smiling is in.
Saying "good morning" is in, not greeting your neighbor is out.
And, finally, as a hopeful Idle climbs back in his tree, he glances over his shoulder, and says: "Respecting our beautiful islands and everyone who lives here is in. It always is in."*
*Idle says living the above mantra is his definition of a true Virgin Islander.
