Just for Fun Takes Lead in Quarren Schjang Softball Finals

Dec. 12, 2008 — The Quarren Schjang Softball League’s defending champions, Just for Fun, got off to a good start on Wednesday by knocking off the Rebels 11-5 in game one of the finals at the D.C. Canegata Ballpark.
All season long the Rebels had been a thorn in the side of the defending champions as they won the regular season head-to-head match-up three games to one. But the playoffs are a different story and after Wednesday’s win the champs are two games away from their ninth crown in as many seasons.
Just for Fun pitcher Mario Ortiz gave up 11 hits in getting the complete game victory, but he was able to make some big pitches at key moments to squash several potential Rebels rally.
Just for Fun, batting first, staged an early two-out, four-run rally in the top of the first to grab the early lead and was never headed for the rest of the contest. After a double play erased the first to batters, the defending champions scored four runs on a two-run double by Eustace Davis and RBI singles by Guido Schjang and Melvin George. Ortiz was sharp early and he was able to keep the Rebels off the board for the first three innings.
Meanwhile, Just for Fun was having their way with Rebels ace pitcher, Martin Burgos, over the first two innings. They reached him for three more run in the top of the second to extend their lead to 7-0 at the end of two innings. They scored three runs on a two-run home run by Guido Schjang and an RBI single by Cruz Soto.
Burgos settled down after the second inning and he kept the champs off the board over the next three innings. His team, meanwhile, finally got to Ortiz in the bottom of the fourth when Edgardo Sanes blasted a three-run home run over the right-centerfield fence, and the Rebels trailed 7-3 after four innings.
The score would stay that way until the top of the seventh when Just for Fun came up with four insurance runs to crush any comeback ideas that the Rebels may have been harboring. They scored four runs on a two-run single by Melvin George and RBI singles by Enrique Soto and Raymond Cintron to now lead 11-3.
The Rebels did not go quietly in their last at bat, however, as they were able to come up with two runs on an RBI double by Darwin Dowling and an RBI ground out by Mervin Mills to make the final score a more respectable 11-5.
Ortiz pitched the win for Just for Fun while Burgos took the loss for the Rebels. Top hitters for the winners were Schjang, 3 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs, Melvin George 2 for 4 with three RBIs and Davis was 1 for 2 with two RBIs. For the Rebels Sanes was 2 for 2 with a home run and three RBIs, Dowling 2 for 3 with one RRI, and Collin King was 3 for 4.
