African Art Educator and Local Artist to Lecture at CMCA

Dec. 8, 2008 – The Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts (CMCA) will host a guest lecture by noted African art educator and local artist Pedra Chaffers, who will focus on the history and meaning of African art. It will be held from 6-9 p.m., on Tuesday, Dec. 9, at CMCA. The lecture is free and open to the public.
Entitled Culture through the Arts: African Art in Context, she will offer an overview of traditional African art and its functions. The event is designed to educate people who want to know more about how to interpret and appreciate different styles of African art and culture as well as expand the knowledge base of those already familiar with African art.
A resident of St. Croix, Chaffers spent five years as an education specialist at the National Museum of African Art at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. She holds a degree in art education and museum studies and currently teaches lower and middle school art classes at The Good Hope School. Not only is she an educator of the arts, she is an artist herself. Her work consists of glass beads on canvas, which is inspired by African art.
