Nov. 28, 2008 — Help the Animal Care Center of St. John with its good works by attending its Christmas for the Animals party from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Dec. 5 at Tango Mare vacation villa in Hart Bay, St. John.
Tickets are $100 per person and available at Chelsea Drug Store, St. John Hardware and the Mail Center as well as from Animal Care Center board members. They'll also be available at the door.
The tickets include appetizers and desserts prepared by Caneel Bay Resort, the Westin Resort and Villas and several St. John caterers as well as wine, champagnes and liquors. Cognac and cigars will be available at a cash bar.
"It's going to be so much fun," Animal Care Center President B.J. Harris said.
The fundraiser has a Roaring 20s theme, which means participants can dress to the nines in costume. If that's not their style, island fancy dress will do. Harris said "bits and pieces" of costumes will be for sale at the event.
In keeping with the theme, participants will have to give a password at the door just like partygoers did when Prohibition reigned during the 1920s.
"It's The Great Catsby," Harris said.
Raffle tickets at $10 each or three for $25 will be sold. Prizes include a two-night stay at Biras Creek Resort on Virgin Gorda, a two-night stay at White Bay Sandcastle on Jost Van Dyke, dinners for two at numerous St. John restaurants, and jewelry from several St. John stores.
The money goes to help the Animal Care Center run its shelter. Harris said it currently has a budget of $165,000, with only $15,000 of that coming from the local government.
"That's $150,000 we have to raise," she said.
While the Animal Care Center currently operates a small shelter near the Elaine Sprauve Library, Harris said the organization is saving to buy land in the "country," meaning outside of Cruz Bay, so it can build a larger shelter and operate programs that would generate money.
Harris said that a flea market and a place for residents to board animals would provide funding for the shelter.
