Alert: Road-Repair Projects Scheduled for Monday

Nov. 9, 2008 — Repairs will take place Monday on roads on St. Croix and St. Thomas, weather permitting, part of territory-wide efforts to patch roads.
On St. Croix, a Public Works crew plans to repair a deteriorated section of the roadway on Company Street, according to a statement released Sunday by Public Works.
"This roadway has been in a state of disrepair for some time since it became necessary to make repairs to an underground water main," said Public Works Commissioner Darryl Smalls. "The state of disrepair on this road has been a source of inconvenience for motorists on St. Croix. We are hoping that asphalt is available and that the weather cooperates with us on Monday to allow the much-needed repairs on this roadway to be completed."
On St. Thomas, a Public Works crew plans to resurface the road in front of the Jarvis School Annex in Estate Polyberg.
"This roadway has been in a state of disrepair since a damaged underground water pipe caused a portion of the roadway to be dug out to facilitate repairs," Smalls said.
Because of the proximity of the school to the roadway, Public Works will begin work at 6:30 p.m. Monday and traffic will be diverted around the work zone.
"In both of these projects, I am asking for the public's cooperation by adhering to any posted signs and direction from flagmen," Smalls said. "The crews will work diligently to repair these areas as quickly as possible."
General road repairs have been delayed by Hurricane Omar and rain showers that have impacted the territory, Smalls said.
"Despite the inclement weather, the island-wide road-patching project has begun and will continue as long as asphalt material is available from our on-island producers," he said. He cautions however, that it is counterproductive to attempt road repairs if inclement weather is anticipated or being experienced.
