Newborn Baby Killed in Car Wreck

Sept. 12, 2008 — Police are investigating a one-car accident that left a newborn child dead.
The baby, who was just 11 days old, died as a result of severe head trauma after the vehicle collided with a concrete embankment in Estate Diamond about 8 p.m. Thursday.
The two adults in the car — the driver and the baby's mother — sustained minor injuries, said Police Spokeswoman Melody Rames.
The vehicle, a 1995 Nissan Sentra, was heading east on Centerline Road when the driver, a 26-year-old male, apparently lost control of the vehicle and it wrecked, according to reports to police.
The female passenger, identified in the statement as 21 years old, was in the backseat of the car, directly behind the driver, Rames said, according to the statement.
Police could not immediately say whether road conditions or speed were a factor. Investigators are determining whether the baby was in a safety seat and whether the adults were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident, Rames said.
