Feds Grant Nearly $1.4 Million to St. Croix HIV/AIDS Housing Programs

Aug. 20, 2008 — Some of the territory's neediest got a boost from the U.S. government when Housing and Urban Development Secretary Steve Preston announced more than $1.37 million in grants for housing programs for people living with HIV/AIDS.
The grant money — part of $19.3 million in grants to 18 local programs nationwide — will go to V.I. Community AIDS Resource and Education in Christiansted.
St. Croix's need was deemed almost as high as Chicago's, which received nearly $1.385 million.
"VICARE's Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS Program targets a number of populations — including chronically homeless, rural and minority populations — with varying housing needs," said a news release from HUD.
Without a stable home, it would be very difficult for low-income people to manage complex drug therapies, the release said.
"These grants are quite literally a lifeline for those struggling to find a decent home while trying to manage complex drug therapies," Preston said. "Working closely with our local partners, we can offer these families the support they need to concentrate on staying healthy instead of worrying how they'll pay next month's rent."
Other community groups receiving HIV/AIDS housing grants:
— Los Angeles received $1.43 million;
— The Alaska Housing Finance Corp in Anchorage received $915,440;
— The Housing Authority of Cochise County in Bisbee, Ariz., received $611,582;

— Illinois' Pioneer Civic Services in Peoria received $402,281;
