Fall Semester Orientation Schedules Available Online; Classes Start Aug. 18
Fall orientation schedules for new and transfer students are now available from the Student Life Services page of the UVI web site www.uvi.edu UVI's fall 2008 semester classes will begin on Aug. 18 and continue through Dec. 10.

2008-2009 Catalog/Graduate Bulletin Available Online from UVI Web Site
Online versions of the 2008-2009 UVI Catalog and Graduate Bulletin publications are now available from the UVI home page: www.uvi.edu. The publications are offered in the Adobe Acrobat (PDF) format which can be read from any computer.
2008 University Convocation Slated for Thursday, Aug. 14
The University of the Virgin Islands will conduct the Fall 2008 University Convocation from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 14. The University Convocation is mandatory for all faculty and staff. UVI students and alumni are invited to attend. The convocation will be available on the St. Thomas campus in Business Building room 110 and the CELL Classroom. On the St. Croix campus, the convocation will be held in Evans Center room 401.

Faculty Convocation Set for Aug. 15
UVI's 2008 Convocation for full-time, part-time and research faculty is scheduled for 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 15. Sessions will be held in Evans Center room 401 on the St. Croix campus and in Business 110 and Education 101 on the St. Thomas campus. Volunteers Sought for 2008 Alumni Phone-A-Thon on Aug. 25-28
Members of the University community – students, alumni, faculty, staff and friends – are invited to join in the 2008 Alumni Phone-A-Thon. Volunteers will take to the phone banks to seek financial support from UVI's alumni, from Aug. 25 through 28, in the UVI Sports and Fitness Center 's VIP Room. The effort will continue from 6 to 9 p.m. each evening.

From 15 to 20 volunteers are needed each night. Food and drink will be provided to volunteers each evening. Prizes – including UVI beach chairs, lunch coolers and umbrellas – will be presented to the top callers.
The 2008 Phone-A-Thon goal is $25,000. Funds raised will be used to benefit many areas of the University, including several academic and enrichment programs. Volunteers are still needed for each evening – Monday through Thursday. Interested persons should call UVI's Office of Institutional Advancement at 693-1047 or 693-1053.

Texas Chili Cook-off Set Sunday Aug. 17 at Brewer's Bay Beach
The 24th annual Texas Society of the Virgin Islands Chili Cook-Off is scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 17, at Brewer's Bay Beach and on the grounds of the Reichhold Center . Chili cooks will vie for the best dish in a variety of categories, with one winner going on to represent the V.I. at the national cook-off in Texas . Proceeds are presented to local charities.

Tree Pruning Workshop Set Aug. 17 on UVI's St. Thomas Campus
A free workshop on tree pruning is scheduled for 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 17, in the first-floor conference room of UVI's Administration and Conference Center on UVI's St. Thomas campus. The workshop will cover the basics of tree pruning for the homeowner. It will cover tools of the trade, tree biology and pruning techniques. An opportunity for practical pruning practice is planned. The workshop is sponsored by UVI's Cooperative Extension Service. For details, contact Extension Specialist Carlos Robles at 693-1083.

UVI Students' Survey on Ecosystems Seeking Participation of V.I. Residents
A group of UVI students is surveying U.S. Virgin Islands residents on how they relate to coastal ecosystems. Data generated by the study will help natural resource managers design management strategies for human as well as marine and terrestrial environments. An online survey is available from this Web site: http://www.chrissettar.com. In completing the survey, which should take less than 20 minutes, participants will be aiding scientists, resource managers, UVI students and the general public.

UVI Upward Bound Offices Announce Closing Schedule
The Upward Bound Office on UVI's St. Thomas campus will be closed from Friday, Aug. 8, to Friday, Sept. 12. The office will reopen on Monday, Sept. 15. On the St. Croix campus the Upward Bound Office will be closed from Monday, Aug. 4, to Friday, Sept. 5. The office will reopen on Monday, Sept. 8, 2008.

Workshop for Addiction Professionals Set Aug. 15 on St. Thomas Campus
Universidad Central Del Caribe of Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands Department of Health Division of Mental Health, Alcoholism and Drug Dependency, and UVI's Counseling Services will present a workshop titled "Buprenorphine Treatment: Training for Multidisciplinary Addiction Professionals" from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 15. The session, which is free, will take place in Business room 110 on UVI's St. Thomas campus.
Abuse of and addiction to opioids, powerful pain relievers, remains a critical national public health concern. To address this problem, a training program for multidisciplinary addiction professionals has been developed. It is designed to provide a broad overview of the medication, its effect, and the role of non-physician practitioners in providing and supporting the treatment of individuals who receive this medication.
Seating for the workshop, which includes breakfast and lunch, is limited. Individuals interested in attending should register by sending email to joseg.soto@uccaribe.edu or carmenl.rivera@uccaribe.edu.

HIV/AIDS Gender Specific Program Slated Aug. 22 on St. Croix Campus
UVI's Division of Student Affairs – Health Services Center invites the UVI Community to its HIV/AIDS Gender Specific Program sponsored by HOPE Inc. from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 22, in the UVI Student Center/Cafetorium. The focus of this program is to identify, prevent and reduce the transmission of HIV/AIDS in the Virgin Islands community, especially among females through professional HIV/AIDS education. Wellness Day and Health Fair Set Aug 22 on St. Thomas Campus
The Student Activities Office on UVI's St. Thomas campus will conduct the 19th Annual Health Fair and Wellness Day activities from 3 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 22, at the Recreation Center . Health Screening services will be offered. A variety of activities, including the 'Round de Campus Relay and a staff vs. students softball game are also planned. UVI to Host Annual Labor Day Volleyball Tourney August 29-31
UVI's Athletic Department will host its eighth annual Labor Day Volleyball Invitational Tournament in the Sports and Fitness Center on Aug. 29, 30 and 31. Club teams from Kean University ( New Jersey ), Metropolitan University (Puerto Rico), the Midwest, the Eastern Caribbean, BVI, St. Croix and St. Thomas will participate. The matches will serve as a pre-season test for UVI's men's and women's Bucs squads.
The tournament begins at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 29, with three matches. Play continues at 10 a.m. on Saturday. The action breaks Saturday afternoon and resumes Saturday evening at 7 p.m. Play will conclude Sunday afternoon and evening, with games beginning at 3 p.m. Admission is free and the concession stand will be open for refreshments. UVI Today… Web Log Feature

A new web site feature — a web log (or blog) named UVI Today … — has been launched in support of the University's community outreach efforts. The new blog offers a quick way to publish photos taken at UVI events and activities. Click here to view UVI Today… All photos featured on the blog are archived for future reference. The blog also allows viewers to forward photos of interest to friends and associates. Members of the UVI community are encouraged to send photos taken at UVI events and activities for possible inclusion in the blog to the UVI Public Relations Office at pr@uvi.edu.

Free Praxis Review Cours Available for Teachers at CELL
UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (CELL) Center in collaboration with the V.I. Department of Education will be offering a free Praxis II tutorial for public school teachers in August. The tutorial sessions on St. Thomas are set to begin 3:30 pm on Aug. 19 at the UVICELL Center . The St. Croix sessions will commence 3 p.m. on Aug. 26. The location for the St Croix session will be announced at a later time.
This free service is funded by the Department of Education. It prepares teachers for the Praxis II exam so that they can be designated as highly qualified teachers in order to meet the mandates of the No Child Left Behind Act. Real Estate Sales Course to Begin Sept. 13 at CELL
Individuals interested in learning more about the real estate industry are urged to register for the Real Estate Sales course offered by UVI's – Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (CELL) Center. Classes will be held 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturdays beginning Sept. 13. All sessions will be held at the Joseph A. Simpson Building in Frederiksted, St. Croix .
The course is designed to prepare individuals for the Real Estate Salesperson licensing examination. Topics covered will include Real Estate Theory, Mathematics, USVI Rules and Regulations and all applicable sections of the VI Code. Basic Bookkeeping Course Offered by CELL in September
UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (CELL) Center will offer a course on basic bookkeeping skills in September. Introduction to Bookkeeping will be offered from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. every Tuesday and Wednesday from Sept. 2 through 17. All sessions will be held at the UVI-CELL Center on the St. Thomas campus.
Participants will learn to perform basic bookkeeping functions such as journalizing and posting business transactions, preparing basic financial statements, reconciling bank statements, preparing payroll and more.
