Public Encouraged to Attend Special Olympics Games on St. Thomas

May 30, 2008 — The public is invited to the June 2 Special Olympics games for athletes from St. Thomas and St. John, who are expected to turn out in record numbers, according to the organization's coordinator, Jane Brown.
"We believe this is due to the fact that we are organizing the event on a regular school day," Brown said in a written communication. "This allows the school system to bus the children directly and helps the parents enormously."
The games, which Brown says are devoted to children who are "intellectually challenged," should draw some 150 participants this year, more than double the 60 who joined in last year. In addition, some 30 volunteers are expected to be on hand for the festivities, which begin at 9:30 a.m. at Antilles School.
The St. Thomas/St. John Special Olympics has been in existence for more than 30 years, Brown said. She hopes to see a big gathering of spectators on the Antilles campus Monday to enjoy the games.
"We are inviting both children and adults ages 8 to 88, and encouraging families to bring the entire family out," Brown said. "This is part of our effort to break the stigma associated with those who are intellectually challenged."
Following opening ceremonies, the participants will compete in track and field, basketball, tennis, a softball throw, the long jump and power lifting, Brown said.
Spectators will be treated to free food and drinks, and the day will conclude with an early dinner and a dance, according to Brown.
