Dive, Beach Cleanup Slated for Frederiksted

Feb. 7, 2008 — If any St. Croix resident is wondering what they can do to help revive the beauty of the reefs around their island, head for Frederiksted on Saturday.
The St. Croix Committee for the International Year of the Reef is organizing a dive, snorkel and beach cleanup at Dorsch Beach and Frederiksted Pier from 8 a.m. until noon.
First on the groups agenda is Dorsch Beach and underwater Frederiksted Pier.
At 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. there will be free snorkel clinics (gear provided) at Dorsch Beach.
At 11 a.m. there will be free snacks/refreshments, music and prizes at Frederiksted Clock Tower.
Organizer Emily Tyner says St. Croix Women's Dive Association, the environmental science class from St. Croix Educational Complex and the Natures Environmental Role Model from St. Croix Central High School and CRABBS, the St. Croix dive club have all indicated they will take part.
"This is an opportunity for people to learn about the wonderful resources of the coral reefs," said Tyner, of the University of Virgin Islands Marine Advisory Service.
Chairing the committee with Tyner are Karlyn Langjahr of East Marine Park and Kim Ishida.
N2Blue Dive Shop is giving free tanks and weights to divers participating.
