Jan. 16, 2008 – The Department of Planning and Natural Resources' Virgin Islands Energy Office (VIEO), in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), will hold a Wind Energy Workshop that will start at 8:30 a.m., on Thursday, Jan. 31, at the Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort. It will be an opportunity for residents to learn about wind power's potential. All residents are invited to the daylong workshop, which will include experts from the DOE, Wind Powering America, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), Sandia National Laboratories and a Caribbean wind farm expert, according to a press release from DPNR.
Gov. John P. deJongh and Bevan Smith, VIEO director, will give opening remarks. Dwight Bailey, project manager of DOE's National Energy Technology Laboratory in Pittsburgh, Pa., will give an overview of the workshop. He provides financial assistance, program information, and technical assistance to state and local governments, and public and private organizations in the Eastern part of the United States for the U.S. DOE Wind Powering America Program.
Workshop topics will include: Commercial Wind Technology, Current Wind Technology Applications, Validated Wind Map for the U.S. Virgin Islands, Avian Issues in the Virgin Islands, Small Wind Opportunities in the Virgin Islands and Caribbean Wind Projects.
Registration for the workshop is $25. A registration form can be found at the VIEO Web site at www.vienergy.org. The registrations should be at the Energy Office by Thursday, Jan. 24.
