Dec. 31. 2007 — The Virgin Islands Energy Office and V.I. Water and Power Authority finished up a busy year of cooperation Monday, dropping off two dozen energy-efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs at Catholic Charities in Christiansted, to be given to the needy.
In October, National Energy Awareness Month, the Energy Office did energy use reviews of several area non-profits. Thanks to WAPA, the Energy Office was able to replace wasteful regular incandescent bulbs with the fluorescent bulbs at the Lighthouse Mission, a shelter for homeless in Christiansted; the Women's Coalition's shelter for victims of domestic violence in Christiansted; My Brothers Table in Frederiksted, which serves meals to the homeless, and the Kings Hill School in Estate La Reine.
The Energy Office also gave more than 200 of the energy-efficient lights to the Queen Louise Home for Children, an orphanage, as part of its Exchange a Light Campaign.
The Energy Office/WAPA partnership replaced bulbs at the Elaine Ione Sprauve Library on St. John, gave them to the Family Resource Center on St. Thomas and to 10,000 Helpers of St. Croix, an organization that helps families in crisis.
"Changing light bulbs won't solve all our energy problems, but it shows that Virgin Islanders are going in the right direction." Bevan R. Smith, VIEO director, said.
