Virgin Islands Participates in Tennis Sectionals

Nov. 9, 2007 – A delegation of two tennis teams, one from St. Croix and the other from St. Thomas, recently competed in the United States Tennis Association/Chrysler Sectional Adult League Mixed Doubles Tennis Championships held at the Honda Tennis Center in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. The teams qualified for the sectionals by capturing their respective league title in the recently completed USTA/VITA Adult Mixed Doubles League.
The Cruzan Aces competed in the 8.0 combined mixed doubles league sectionals and lost to the Parque Central Team 2-1, in the quarterfinals. At the No. 1 encounter, the Parque Central Team, Alejandro Rosario and Yvette Sud, defeated the Cruzan Aces, Stan Myrie and Marthia Herelle-Kononoff 3-6, 6-3, 1-0. At the No. 2 encounter, the Cruzan team, Dante Galiber and Dynel Sota, defeated the team of Gustavo Gonzalez and Teremar DeValle 6-1, 2-6, 1-0. Completing the 2-1 win for Parque Central, the team of Jose Delgado and Cristi Soto defeated Alex and Latoya Elizee 6-1, 7-6.
The St. Thomas Team competed in the 7.0 combined mixed-doubles league sectionals and was defeated by the Honda Tennis Center Team 3-0. The No. 1 Honda TC Team, Juan Marrero and Emma Mendoza, defeated George Newton and Agnes Williams 6-0, 6-3. At No. 2, the Honda TC Team, Daniel Robles and Marielly Morales, defeated Jerome Gerald and Fenella Cooper 6-2, 6-0; and at the No. 3 encounter, the 'Honda TC Team, Xavier Gonzalez and Marisell Orsini, defeated Vincent Cooper and Jacqueline Andrea Lee 6-1, 6-4.
The Virgin Islands Tennis Association in cooperation with the Caribbean Tennis Association is currently developing the continuation of adult league play by preparing to conduct men's and women's senior (over 50) league play scheduled for late January, 2008. VITA is also planning to conduct a men's and women's adult (over 19) league in the early spring of 2008.
