Dear Source:
This is a reminder to all your readers that they have a unique opportunity for input to our Constitutional Convention by e-mailing their ideas to yourviconstitutionideas@hotmail.com or mailing them to Your Constitution Ideas, 36 A&B La Grande Princesse, Christiansted, VI 00820.
Here are some thoughts of my own which I believe should be included in our new constitution and I am sending them in today.
-Create sub-districts on the islands for senatorial elections.
-Decrease the number of senators in the legislature, as was voted on by the people of our islands. My thought is that there should be either seven or nine senators.
-One sub-district should be St. John with that island's residents deciding for themselves who should be their representative. I know that this flies in the face of the one man one vote principle but it seems to me that St. Johnians should be able to select their own spokesperson as would those in the newly created sub-districts.
-Make the job of senator a part time position with an appropriate part time salary. Most legislatures under the American flag are filled with citizen representatives who have real jobs and who meet on a limited basis. They feel it is their altruistic privilege to conduct the people's business. A month of sessions in October to set up a budget and a month of sessions in April to deal with laws, rules and regulations, that might need implementing or adjusting, seems sufficient to our needs.
