May 23, 2007 – The American Red Cross will be teaching classes in water safety by certified instructors this summer. The classes are for anyone between six months and 105 years old and will be held at Magens Bay Water Safety Training Center. Registration for the program will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., seven days a week, at the Magens Bay Gatehouse. Classes will be held for five Saturdays beginning on May 26. The cost of the class is $60 ($50 for returning students) for the five weeks, which includes water safety books.
Children ages 6 months – 2 years must be accompanied by a parent or guardian in the water and can register for the 10-10:30 a.m. classes.
Children ages 3 – 4 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian in the water and can register for the 10:30-11 a.m. class.
Children ages 5-17 from beginners through advanced swimmers can register for the 10-11 a.m. or the 11 a.m. to noon class.
Adults age 18 – 105 can register for the 11 a.m.-noon class.
Waterfront Lifeguard Training class begins with a pre-test at 1 p.m., on Saturday, May 26.
1. 550-yard swim using crawl and breast stroke with rhythmic breathing
2. Timed event: 1 minute 40 seconds
Swim 25 yards approach stroke,
Retrieve ten-pound brick at 8 feet,
Swim holding brick with two hands back to shore
3. Swim 15 yards underwater while picking up three objects
Lifeguard classes will be held from 1-5 p.m., on five Saturdays, May 26 – June 23, at Magens Bay or from 4-8 p.m., on five Wednesdays, May 30 – June 20, at Nisky Center. The cost of the class is $200, which includes textbooks and supplies.
