Feb. 26, 2007 — The murder trial of former Police Detective Joel Dowdye, charged with murdering his ex-girlfriend and injuring her companion in March 2005, will begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday.
Jury selection for the trial ended around 5:30 p.m. on Monday. After spending more than five hours at the V.I. Superior Court, a large pool of potential jurors was eventually whittled down to a 12-member panel. Four alternate jurors were also selected.
During the trial, the jury will remain sequestered in a local hotel.
Dowdye, who faces first-degree and attempted-murder charges, has remained in Police custody since he turned himself in on March 25, 2005. He is accused of killing Sherett James and shooting Daren "Bogle" Stevens.
V.I. Superior Court Judge Brenda Hollar will preside over the trial. Local defense attorney Stephen Brusch will represent Dowyde, while assistant attorneys general Nolan Paige and Cornelius Williams will prosecute the case.
