Orchid Society Will Hold Annual Show

Feb. 21, 2007 – The St. Croix Orchid Society will present the 36th Annual Orchid Show at the American Legion Hall in Christiansted. The show will be open from 3-6 p.m., on Friday, Feb. 23; from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., on Saturday, Feb. 24; and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., on Sunday, Feb. 25. Admission is $5 and the proceeds help to fund the annual show as well as educational programs of the Orchid Society.
The theme for this year's show is "Carnival of Orchids," and the event promises to be a festive and informative celebration of the natural beauty of these popular plants. Because it is an American Orchid Society affiliated show, accredited judges will travel to St. Croix from Puerto Rico and Florida to judge plants and flowers to consider them for national awards.
The beautiful and educational displays of blooming orchid plants are the highlight of the show, but there will also be orchid plants for sale, daily raffles of orchids, and other orchid related items. There will also be an opportunity to purchase raffle tickets for a chance to win original artwork by St. Croix artist Jane Akin, which was featured on this year's show poster. Also, St. Croix Bonsai Society will exhibit selected specimens from their collections. This year's show is dedicated to Erik and Jennie Lawaetz, who have supported the Society since the first annual show.
The St. Croix Orchid Society was established in 1963 with the mission of acquiring and disseminating knowledge on the growing and culture of orchids. This show is one way that the Society promotes interest in this rewarding hobby. Membership in the St. Croix Orchid Society is open to anyone with an interest in learning more about these fascinating plants.
