Bumann Cruises to Another Cycling Win

Feb. 5, 2007 — Robert Bumann attacked in the first mile of Sunday’s El Ocho cycling race and easily stormed to his second win of the young season, according to a news release from the V.I. Cycling Federation.
Only John Riggs was able to hang on Bumann’s wheel during the initial surge, and the two worked together to open up a five-minute gap on the rest of the field quickly. Riggs was dropped on the final long, flat, upwind section at Longford, and finished 23 seconds adrift. Chavis Lunceford was almost seven minutes back in third.
El Ocho is a figure-eight-shaped course that has a few climbs, but was marked more by the steady wind. On a normal day, the attacks are incessant, but Bumann quickly took the steam out of the field, and his competitors were looking only to survive by the end of the 42-mile race.
Paul Trivino also captured his second win in the Expert category, meaning that he will now move up to tackle the big boys in the Elite group. He bested Jason Snow by more than two minutes in the 21-mile contest. Dale Scope finished another three minutes back in third.
The 21-strong Sport group saw first-time racer Troy Holloway smoke the field in his successful introduction to the sport. He finished well ahead of Joseph Thomas and Donald Christian in the 13-mile race.
Heidi Snow took control from the start in the women’s division, winning their 13-mile contest over Denise Blanchette and Elizabeth Nurnberger.
The next event on the calendar is the women’s-only Valentine Time Trail on Sunday. The six-mile race will start at Divi Carina Bay and finish at the old South Shore Cafe.
