District MATHCOUNTS Competition Scheduled

Feb. 3, 2007 – Over 60 elementary and junior high students from 11 public and private schools on St. Croix will compete in the 22nd Annual District MATHCOUNTS competition scheduled for 9 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 22, at the Good Hope School gymnasium.
"Mathletes" will compete individually and in teams to solve written and oral problems in algebra, probability, statistics and geometry. The mathletes are currently in training, using specially prepared coaching materials, provided free of charge to elementary and middle schools in the competition. Students will also compete in state and national competitions and win prizes such as trophies, scholarships and trips. The state competition is scheduled for March 8, on St. Thomas, according to a press release from St. Croix District mathematics coordinator Juanita Boneque.
Participating schools are: Ricardo Richards, Evelyn M. Williams and Pearl B. Larsen elementary schools; Elena L. Christian and John H. Woodson junior high schools; and Good Hope, Country Day, IQRA Academy, Manor, Church of God Holiness Academy and the Seventh Day Adventist School.
The V.I. Education Department and St. Croix Rotary Mid-Isle Club are local sponsors of MATHCOUNTS. National sponsors include: Dow Chemical Company Foundation, General Motors Foundation, Texas Instruments Inc., 3M Foundation and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). CNA, the National Society of Professional Engineers, and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics are founding sponsors.
