Oct. 16, 2006 Physician and former candidate for lieutenant governor Dr. Alfred O. Heath has publicly endorsed the gubernatorial team of Sen. Adlah "Foncie" Donastorg and Dr. Cora Christian.
In a letter made public this week, Dr. Heath states that the Donastorg/Christian team has proven its commitment "through actual achievements and initiatives that benefit the people of the Virgin Islands."
"As a lifelong Democrat, I will always give special consideration to Democratic candidates and nominees," Heath said. "Party loyalty is admirable, but our first loyalty must be to these Virgin Islands. I proudly endorse Sen. Adlah "Foncie" Donastorg and Dr. Cora Christian for Governor and Lt. Governor of the United States Virgin Islands."
Dr. Heath has been an active member of the Democratic Party for more 40 years and ran for the office of lieutenant governor in 1994. The Donastorg/Christian Team is running under the "no party" designation.
In his open letter to the public, which was printed on page 23 of the Virgin Islands Daily News October 12 edition, Heath states that he is "quite familiar" with the individual records and experience of the three teams vying for Government House and that he supported Sen. Donastorg and Dr. Christian.
"This team best embodies our traditional values of compassion, candor and courage," Dr. Heath wrote. "This team is in touch with everyday concerns of hardworking families and this team is truly willing to fight for this territory. They have spent their entire professional lives working in the trenches right here in the Virgin Islands."
Dr. Heath stated that he had closely followed the political career of Sen. Donastorg and that his willingness to take risks and to standalone were the "hallmarks of a true leader".
"This is a man of both vision and action," he wrote.
He also had high praise for Lt. Governor Candidate Dr. Christian.
"Dr. Christian stands for and achieves excellence in everything she does I can think of no better person to take on the administrative challenges faced by the Lt. Governor."
Dr. Christian and Sen. Donastorg stated that they remain extremely grateful for Dr. Heath's support.
