July 14, 2006 – As the V.I. Water and Power Authority begins its third phase of construction of the underground feeder in Frederiksted on July 17, traffic will be rerouted.
While one-way traffic traveling into Frederiksted will remain on Route 70 towards Fisher Street, Percy Gardine Avenue will be used as a detour for traffic leaving Frederiksted. Motorists are urged to observe road signs and detours in the area in order to avoid traffic delays and accidents.
Work is scheduled between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. daily, except on weekends. Construction crews will be excavating and installing pipes and manholes from the Hannah's Rest stoplight intersection, north on Route 70 to Fisher Street, and on Prince Street to the Lagoon Street area.
The Feeder #8 undergrounding project is a continuation of the WAPA's effort to lessen the negative impact of wind storms and hurricanes on electrical service. During Phases I and II of the project, the authority constructed its underground facilities from the Richmond Power Plant to the Henry E. Rohlsen Airport and from the airport to the Hannah's Rest stoplight intersection outside of Frederiksted.
Phase III is expected to be completed by mid-October. The entire Feeder #8 project is anticipated to be completed by June 2008.
