Jan. 31, 2006 — The Division of Environmental Protection Tuesday investigated an overflowing manhole discharging raw sewage in the Aureo Diaz Heights Housing Community on St. Croix. The manhole is located in the street adjacent to the Charles H. Emmanuel School. The raw sewage is flowing from the manhole, pooling in the street and continues to flow west into a nearby gut.
According to a press release from Commissioner Dean C. Plaskett, of the Department of Planning and Natural Resources, the Waste Management Authority has been notified of the situation and is working to correct the problem.
DPNR is advising the public to avoid the areas around the overflowing manhole especially children and adults with compromised immune systems. Standing or running water in these areas may contain contaminants or pollutants harmful to human health. DPNR will continue to monitor the impacted area. For additional information regarding water quality please call 773-1082.
