Golfers Contribute to Katrina Fund, Others Urged

Sept. 2, 2005 – Everyone who has a television or who has read a newspaper recently knows that residents in southern United States need help after being hit by Hurricane Katrina. Organizations are appealing to residents to help them help victims of this disaster.
The management of the Buccaneer Golf Course’s has come up with a way to get money to the American Red Cross Hurricane Katrina Disaster Relief Fund.
Each weekend the course is the site of what is called a Low Net Kicker Tournament. Both Buccaneer Golf Shop and the East End Golf Club will match this weekend the $5 entry fees collected and it will all be donated to the American Red Cross. Since this weekend is a four-day weekend, participation is expected to be high.
"Having been through hurricanes ourselves, we are especially sensitive to the situation people up North are encountering as a result of Hurricane Katrina. The scope of the problems they face are so great that whatever we can do to help, we need to do," Tim Johnston, the Buccaneer's PGA Professional, said in a press release Thursday.
The East End Golf Club’s treasurer, Mike Gilbert, is an insurance adjuster and is currently in Louisiana assisting with the recovery effort.
Jeanne Johnston, the Buccaneer's LPGA Teaching & Club Professional and the East End Golf Club's secretary, seconds her husband’s sentiments. "While the East End Golf Club’s activities are primarily golf-related, we have in the past made donations to causes we’ve felt warranted our attention. Katrina is an unusual situation and one we feel we can help with. We hope our offer to match the golfers' entry fees will encourage more golfers to participate in the Low Net Kicker Tournament, which is a simple full handicap event that golfers can play at any time during Labor Day Weekend, which will in turn mean more money for the relief fund."
Winners of the tournament will be designated as usual, although no prizes will actually be distributed.
