Waste Management Authority Searching for Committee Members

Aug. 19, 2005 –The V.I. Waste Management Authority needs members to serve on its Citizens Advisory Committee. Each island will have its own advisory committee.
If you'd like to volunteer for the committee or would like to learn more about waste management issues, attend one of the three meetings scheduled for next week. All run from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The meetings kick off Tuesday on St. Croix at the Education Department's Curriculum Center in Kingshill.
Wednesday, the Waste Management team moves to St. Thomas for a meeting at the Education Department's Curriculum Center in Tutu.
Thursday is St. John's turn, with the meeting held at the Julius E. Sprauve School cafeteria.
WMA Executive Director May Adams Cornwall said the Citizen Advisory Board will play an important role in the development of the territory's integrated solid waste and wastewater management program and projects.
"Community Advisory Committees facilitate public participation and involvement in the decision-making process for the selection of wastewater and solid waste systems that will impact our entire community," she said in a news release.
Stella Saunders, the agency's program manager for coordination and public affairs, said the number of people to serve on the advisory committees has not been decided.
"It may vary depending on the subject matter," she said.
Saunders said that the focus for the meetings will vary by island. She said that on St. Croix, the integrated solid waste management plan will be the main topic.
"We'll discuss how we want to manage waste," she said.
On St. Thomas, the focus will be on collection issues. She said that changes in the number and location of collection bins are coming.
Saunders said St. John's topic will cover special waste issues like tire and batteries.
