Sunset Jazz Presents Pikey Copemann and Friends

Aug.19, 2005 – Have you ever noticed how artistic souls are oftentimes accomplished in numerous mediums? Friday, August 19th's Sunset Jazz in Frederiksted's featured artist is no exception to that conundrum. Being one of the most talented jazz saxophonists in the territory, Dimitri "Pikey" Copemann, a St. Croix native, teaches art at Lew Muckel School and is also an accomplished painter and poet. He has been a jazz fan since his Central High School days. Copemann has performed with some of the top bands in St. Croix including VI Jazz Ensemble, Jamesy & the Happy 7, Free Association and Taco & the Playboys. Listening to this fine artist play is pure enjoyment; watching him play is an additional treat! The audience can ?feel" his music as he's manipulating his sax to bring forth all kinds of marvelous sounds—- it is, indeed, magical. Ahhhh…..artistic souls!
Joining the artistic Copemann on stage is a host of creative, multi-talented geniuses in their own right! Check out this line up: Vocals- the silken voice of Rufus James, Guitar- Sen. Ronnie Russell, Keyboards- Benjamin Jacobs-El, Bass-Marsvyn David, Drums-Ken "Afra" Daley, Congas-Charles Farrell.
Yes, it's safe to say that Sunset Jazz concert goers are in for a musical treat with this ensemble of musicians!
Sunset Jazz organizers remind concert goers to bring chairs and/or blankets as seating in the park is at a minimum. And please be cool: no coolers! FEDA operates a cash bar to defray the costs of event production while Hispanos Unidos sells food utilizing the proceeds to provide community services such as after school programs!
Sunset Jazz concerts, which start at 6 p.m. and last for two hours, are free with families encouraged to attend. Presented by the non-profit community organization, the Frederiksted Economic Development Association, FEDA is joined in its efforts to present Sunset Jazz by WTJX/ Channel 12, the local PBS station, which assists with video taping of Sunset Jazz with events airing on Channel 12 Saturday nights at 8 p.m., and Sunny 99.5 fm, the Official Radio Station of Sunset Jazz.
