Safety Zone Fashion Show Set for Saturday

Aug. 2, 2005 – Put on your glad rags for Saturday's 10th annual "Island Styling" fashion show sponsored by St. John's Safety Zone.
"It's really a lot of fun," Safety Zone director Iris Kern said.
The event runs from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Caneel Bay Resort's Equator Restaurant. Tickets run $25 and include hors d'oeuvres and two drinks. A cash bar is available for people who want more to drink. Music will be by the Mark Wallace Band.
Tickets are available at Connections and Chelsea Drug Store on St. John and Home Again, Dockside Books and Modern Music on St. Thomas. Tickets are also available at the door.
Clothes will come from a variety of St. John stores, including the Phoenix, the Safety Zone's used clothing store.
Kern said that the youngest model is 7 and the oldest 74, with all ages in between. Eight of the 26 models are boys and men modeling island-style clothes. The rest are women and girls. Kern said that the diversity of the models reflects the island's cross-cultural aspects.
"We have models who are large, models who are small and models who are black, white and brown," Kern said. Those who wear a size 18 or 20 are as beautiful as those who wear a size two, she added.
Kern said it is one of the few St. John events that brings out all segments of the community. "And it's a chance to support the agency," she said.
The Safety Zone serves more than 200 clients a year, Kern said.
