UVI's Second Summer Session to Run from June 22 through July 28
The University of the Virgin Islands will conduct its second summer session of 2005 on its St. Croix and St. Thomas campuses from Wednesday, June 22, through Thursday, July 28. Information, class schedules and online registration are available via the UVI home page – www.uvi.edu. Online (Banweb) registration is available now through Sunday, June 14. In-person registration is scheduled from 3 to 7 p.m. on both campuses on Wednesday, June 15. For more information, check the UVI home page or call 693-1160 on St. Thomas or 692-4158 on St. Croix.
Youth Movie Making Workshop Application Deadline Extended to June 10
UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts has announced an extension of the application deadline for its fifth annual summer Youth Movie Making Workshop to June 10. The intensive, seven-week workshop is designed to introduce local students ages 13 to 18 to digital film production. Twenty Virgin Islands students will be selected. The program, which costs $700, plus a $50 supplies fee, runs from June 6 through August 6. Scholarships and aid plans are available, but they must be applied for separately. The program is sponsored by the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts and the Law Enforcement Planning Commission-Edward Byrne Memorial Grant. Cooperative Extension Service Offers Free Diabetes Workshop on St. Croix
UVI's Cooperative Extension Service 4-H/Family and Consumer Sciences Program will conduct a free diabetes workshop from 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, June 7. The workshop will take place in Room 133 of the UVI Research and Extension Center on the St. Croix campus. Participants will learn how to count carbohydrates, read nutrition labels and to determine acceptable amounts of starchy foods that diabetics can consume. Student Affairs Office on St. Thomas to be Closed on June 8
The UVI Student Affairs Office on the St. Thomas Campus will be closed on Wednesday, June 8, 2005, to allow personnel to attend an all-day Student Affairs meeting. All departments in the division – Counseling and Placement, Student Housing, Activities, Health Services, the Family Life Center and the Associate Chancellor's office – will be closed for the day. In case of an emergency, please contact UVI Security.
UVI 4-H Summer Academy Offered on St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix
The UVI Cooperative Extension Service is offering 4-H Summer Academies for students ages 5 to 14 on St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix. The academies will run from June 27 through August 5. Daily sessions are scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. General registration began on June 1 and continues as long as vacancies exist. There is still space available at all sites (though St. Croix only has vacancies for students ages 8-10). The academies will be held at Kirwan Terrace School on St. Thomas, Julius Sprauve School on St. John, and Central High School on St. Croix. The fee is $150 per child (and $125 for each additional family member). The children of UVI employees will be charged half-price. Enrichment Institute Offered to High School Juniors, Seniors on St. Croix
Applications are being accepted on UVI's St. Croix campus for a free, 10-day summer enrichment institute named Intellect to STEM (Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). The institute is for high school juniors and seniors. It will run from June 20 through July 1. Some ninth grade students may be accepted, based on space availability. A limited number of spots are available for this fun-filled and intellectually stimulating activity. Applications are available at the UVI Science and Mathematics Division office or by fax by calling 692-4150. The application deadline is Friday, June 10, 2005. UVI-CES Offers June 12 Workshop on Medicinal Plants on St. Croix
The UVI Cooperative Extension Service Agriculture and Natural Resources Program will conduct a free workshop on medicinal plants at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 12, in Room 133 of the UVI Research and Extension Center on the St. Croix Campus. SBDC Plans Estate Planning Seminar for Small Businesses on St. Thomas
UVI's Small Business Development Center will present a seminar titled "Estate Planning (Wealth Preservation and Business Continuation) for Small Businesses," from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, June 13, at the UVI-SBDC Training Facility at Nisky Center on St. Thomas. The presenter will be Julito Francis, a certified financial planner. The session will cover wealth preservation strategies that can help protect small business from lawsuits and creditors, ways to defer up to $170,000 in income and methods of reducing tax liability. Admission is $20. UVI students, staff and veterans are admitted free with valid identification. Pre-registration is required. To pre-register for this seminar contact the UVI-SBDC at 776-3206.
UVI-CES Sets Swine Production Workshop for June 15 on St. Croix
The UVI Cooperative Extension Service and the V. I. Department of Agriculture will conduct a Swine Production and Management Workshop from 7 to 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 15, in Room 133 of the UVI Research and Extension Center on the St. St. Croix campus. Topics to be discussed include housing, nutrition, sanitation and general management. All small livestock farmers having questions on any other livestock production and management issues are also invited. For further information, contact Kofi Boateng at 692-4066 or 692-4069.
