April 11, 2005 – Jamie Keys rode like Sir Edmund Hillary on Sunday, by being the first to summit every hill in the 38-mile South Shore Road Race. Every time the road tipped up, Keys took off. His attacks on the first loop on St. Croix’s East End reduced his serious chasers to John Riggs and Juancito Gario. By the end of the second loop, those two were a distant memory, as Keys continued his dominance in 2005. His time on a blustery day was 1 hour 49 minutes and 40 seconds, with Riggs two minutes in arrears, and Gario two minutes behind that.
The 23-mile Expert category saw triathlete Mike Klein crush his competition, as well. He broke away 10 miles into the race, and was not challenged after that, posting a time of 1:17:16. UVI student Kamal Russell placed second in 1:20:28, and Alex Betancort returned to the cycling scene in third, in 1:21:41.
Another triathlete, Mike Hill, won the 16-mile Sport division, in 49:35. Dick Isherwood was close, placing second in 49:53. Bevern Sage finished on the podium in 52:06. A total of 20 riders competed in this group.
The next race is the East End Individual Time Trial on Sunday April 17. The race will be 13 miles for Sport and Experts, and 26 for Elites. The race is also and excellent training race for those triathletes entered in the St. Croix Half Ironman and St. Croix Cingular Short Course Triathlon. Registration opens at 6:30 AM and the first rider will start promptly at 7 a.m
