UVI Invited to Join Saturday Morning Carnival Walk-A-Thon
The UVI community has been invited to participate in the on-going Saturday morning Carnival "Big Jog, Shape Up Walk-A-Thon" on Saturday, April 9. The Walk-A-Thon includes members from several troupes that will participate in Carnival 2005 Adult's Parade. UVI participants will wear the UVI "Schooling for the Future" tee shirts. Everyone meets at the McDonald's in Wheatley Center for the walk to Brewer's Bay Beach. The walk starts at 6 a.m.
The cotton tee shirts are being sold for $10 (2X and 3X are $12) as a fundraiser for the troupe. The shirts can be purchased in the Public Relations Office in Room 301 of the C.A. Building, the Student Activities Office, the Paiewonsky Library, the UVI Bookstores on St. Croix and St. Thomas and from any Community Engagement Committee member. Everyone's invited.
Sign-up Form for UVI's Carnival Troupe Now Available On-Line
All UVI faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends are encouraged to join the University's 2005 Carnival troupe. On-line sign-up is available from the UVI web page – www.uvi.edu – More photos of carnival costumes for men and additional options will be posted on the web site as soon as they become available. Summer Session; Fall 2005 Class Schedules Now Available On-line
Class schedules for UVI's two 2005 summer sessions, as well as for fall semester 2005 are now available on the UVI web site. Also included are dates and detailed instructions for on-line and in-person registration for both summer and fall classes. The first summer session is scheduled for May 16 through June 17. The second session will run from June 22 through July 28. Due to the addition of a second summer session, advisement and registration for the 2005 Fall semester will be held April 11 through 15. Students Urged to Explore Financial Aid Offerings
UVI President Dr. LaVerne Ragster is urging all UVI students who believe they need financial assistance to visit the UVI Financial Aid Office as soon as possible. The Financial Aid Office is reviewing financing options in order to assist any students who might experience a shortfall. UVI Humanities Festival Continues Through Saturday, April 9
The University of the Virgin Islands is celebrating the humanities with a week-long Humanities Festival that continues through April 9. This year's theme is "Focus on the Folk: Virgin Islands Arts and Culture." Festival events continue at 5:30 p.m. today (April 7) with a series of presentations at the Rock Archives Garden, adjacent to the Humanities Building on the St. Thomas campus. UVI to Host Mini-Courses in Science and Math for Teachers of Grades 7-12
UVI's Science, Math and Technology Professional Development Project will host a series of mini-courses for science and math teachers in grades 7 through 12 in the territory's public and private schools. Successful participants will receive stipends and continuing education unit(s). Applications and more information are available on line at www.uvi.edu/pub-relations/SMT.

UVI Student Organizes Stroke Fair Scheduled for April 11 at Schneider Hospital
University of the Virgin Islands senior nursing student Reba Williams has organized St. Thomas' first-ever Stroke Fair. The event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday, April 11, at Roy Lester Schneider Hospital. Participants will learn the signs, symptoms and risks of stroke. Strokes are medical emergencies that require immediate action. Medical specialists will be on hand at the fair to offer cholesterol and blood pressure screening. Free Foreign Language Films Continue April 6 on St. Thomas Campus
"The Year of Languages" celebration continues with free foreign films each Wednesday at 9 p.m. in Chase Auditorium (B-110) on UVI's St. Thomas campus. The next film is scheduled for Wednesday, April 13.
New UVI Strategic Directions Newsletter Now available on-line
The first issue of a new monthly newsletter – UVI Strategic Directions – concerning the development of UVI's 2006-20012 Strategic Plan is now available from the UVI web page – www.uvi.edu. UVI President Dr. LaVerne Ragster has said that "creating Strategic Plan 2012 will be a collective effort, requiring creative thinking from UVI faculty, staff, students, alumni and the Board of Trustees, as well as our key external partners." This new newsletter documents the progress made so far in this effort. The newsletter is also available at this direct link.
UVI Strategic Plan 2012 Town Hall Meetings Set April 11-13
Virgin Islands residents are invited to help shape the future of the University of the Virgin Islands at UVI-sponsored town hall meetings on April 11 through 13. The general public is invited to share their views and opinions, which will aid in the development of UVI's Strategic Plan for 2012. Each sessions is scheduled at 5:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served. Town hall meeting locations are as follows:

April 12 EPSCoR Lecture to Focus on Long Spined Sea Urchin of St. Croix
Genetic Differentiation among populations of the long-spined black sea urchin, Diadema antillarum, in marine habitats surrounding St. Croix will be the subject of UVI Assistant Professor of Science Dr. Stuart Ketcham at UVI's next EPSCoR Science Lecture scheduled for Tuesday, April 12. The session is scheduled for noon in Chase Auditorium (B-110) on UVI's St. Thomas campus, with a videoconference link to Evans Center room 713 on the St. Croix campus.
The 2005 EPSCoR Science Lecture Series is free and open to the public. It continues at noon on Tuesdays through April 26. Lectures feature UVI or visiting scientists presenting results from their original research. The series is sponsored by the VI-Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) program. Annual Service Awards Set for April 12 and 14; Honoree Lists On-li

UVI will recognize the efforts of its employees during the 31st Annual Service Awards presentations scheduled for April 12 on the St. Croix campus and for April 14 on the St. Thomas campus. The St. Croix session will be held at 2:30 p.m. in the Student Center. On St. Thomas, the presentations will take place at 2 p.m. in the Sports and Fitness Center. UVI's Human Resources Office has posted the complete lists of those to be honored on the UVI web site's – www.uvi.edu – "Latest Link's" section. UVI Plans April 15 Open House on Graduate Programs on Both Campuses
The University of the Virgin Islands will conduct a Graduate Open House on the St. Croix and St. Thomas campuses on Friday, April 15. Individuals in the Virgin Islands work force are encouraged to participate. The session is designed to show how UVI's graduate programs in Business Administration, Education and Social Sciences can help individuals improve their marketability and upward mobility through skill enhancement and technical development.
An emphasis will be made on job placement, financial aid opportunities and graduate admissions requirements. The Graduate Open House will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Chase Auditorium (B-110) on St. Thomas, with a videoconference link to Evans Center Room 401 on the St. Croix campus. St. Thomas Campus Class of 2005 to Meet April 16
The University of the Virgin Islands St. Thomas campus Class of 2005 will meet at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 16, in Chase Auditorium, room B-110 on the St. Thomas campus. Friends of the VI National Park Offer Two Scholarships for Virgin Islanders
The Friends of Virgin Islands National Park is sponsoring a scholarship program with the aim of encouraging study, among Virgin Islanders at the university level, in fields related to natural resource management and/or protection. The $1000 scholarship program will offer two scholarships to Virgin Islanders entering their junior or senior year at an accredited university with a major in a field related to natural resource management. To be eligible, students must:
— Be a Virgin Island resident and have completed high school in the Virgin Islands
— Completde all prerequisite coursework to be able to major in one of the eligible fields of study
— Attain a "B" (3.0) average through the first three semesters for sophomore applicants and through the first five semesters for junior applicants.
The deadline for applications is April 30, 2005. Application forms can be downloaded from the Friends' website.
Upward Bound Alumni Schedule May 14 Videoconference Session
The next meeting of the Upward Bound Alumni Association will be from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 14. The meeting will be held simultaneously on the St. Croix and St. Thomas campuses via videoconference. On St. Croix the meeting will be held in The Theatre (Evans Center room 401). On St. Thomas the meeting will be held in Chase Auditorium (room B-110). All Upward Bound alumni are urged to attend. For more information call 693-1130 or 692-4182.

St. Thomas SGA to Host UVI Sports Olympics – April 8-10
The SGA Sports Committee on the St.Thomas campus will host St.Croix students this week-end, April 8 to 10, for the Annual UVI Sports Olympics between students from St.Thomas and St.Croix
Student Variety Show Set April 8 in UVI Little Theatre
A "Coming to the Stage 11" variety show is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. on Friday, April 8, in the UVI Little Theatre (CA Building). The program will showcase UVI and VI student talent. The grand prize, based on audience applause, is $500. Tickets are on sale at Student Affairs and the UVI Bookstore at $5. An after party will immediately follow the show in the Dining Pavilion. Music will be provided by Headline Band and UVI's very own Wardadli Souljahs.
St. Thomas Campus Student Trustee Candidates Sought; Election Set April 20
The Student Activities Office on the St.Thomas Campus is seeking candidates for the 2005-2006 student representative to the UVI Board of Trustees. Candidates must be: a V.I. resident; a full-time matriculated student, a junior or senior in good academic and social standing, and enrolled on the St.Thomas campus for the 2005-2006 academic year. Please contact the Student Activities Office in the Student Activities Center (between the Middle and North Dormitories) for an application form or call the office at 693-1111 for details. The deadline to apply is Friday, April 15. Elections will be held on Wednesday, April 20.
SGA Elections St. Thomas Scheduled April 20
The UVI Student Government Association on St. Thomas will hold its annual election for the executive and student council members on Wednesday, April 20. The election coincides with the elections for student representative to the UVI Board of Trustees. Polling times/locations are noted here:
9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. — CA Building; Noon to 2 p.m. – Cafeteria; 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. — Business Building
UVI St. Thomas Campus Health Fair Scheduled April 21
The University of the Virgin Islands St. Thomas campus Health Fair 2005 will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 21, in the Sports and Fitness Center. The theme for his year's fair is "Unfolding Your Future: Health an Occupational Asset." Services to be offered include blood pressure and blood sugar screenings, and HIV testing. The fair is free and open to the public. For more information, call Health Services Supervisor Diane Ruan-Viville at 693-1124.
