March 7, 2005 Sen. Adlah "Foncie" Donastorg, upset by complaints from residents on the state of the territory's roads, said Monday he would hold a hearing March 23 to assess the situation.
Donastorg said he "had some concerns" about the roads in the territory because he understood that "recycled asphalt" was being used to fill potholes and even to resurface one road in the Tutu valley, and that was washing away.
"The roads have been in terrible shape for sometime now, and I have received numerous complaints from constituents," Donastorg said. "I am displeased at the pace of repairs, especially given that we receive a great deal of federal highway funds to defray the cost in this area."
The hearing would also address other transportation issues, including, Inspection Lane and the V.I. mass transit system, which Donastorg described as non-existent.
According to a release from his office Monday, Donastorg, chairman of the Senate Government Operations and Consumer Protection Committee, said he was compiling a list of the Virgin Islands' worst potholes, with the help of the community, to present to Public Works at the hearing.
"I would like to present DPW with a specific list of work needed so we can all monitor progress," Donastorg said. "I expect them to keep on schedule as some of these road problems have lingered on for a ridiculous amount of time."
Donastorg cited the Red Hook road, where one lane is riddled with potholes, as an example.
The senator said residents interested in testifying at the hearing or who wanted to report bad roads should contact his office at 693-3583 or 693-3885. They could also email Donastorg at email@example.com
Public Works Commissioner Wayne Callwood said Monday his department was doing its best to repair the roads.
"We have done extensive work on all three islands," Callwood said. "We are working."
Callwood said the following roads have been repaired thus far for fiscal year 2005:
– Wintberg Heights
– Agnes Fancy
– Nadir Knolls
– Hidden Valley
– Tutu Valley
– Route 32 in Frydenhoj
– Cyril Hill
– Route 104
– Centerline Road
– Sion Hill
– La Grand Princess
– Cotton Valley
– Clifton Hill.
