Police Officer Charged With Assault

March 2, 2005 – A slap might have done more than damage a female police officer's face, it might have ended Malik Simone's dreams of a career in law enforcement.
According to police reports, Simone was arrested early in the morning on March 1 after an incident the previous evening when he reportedly slapped a fellow officer at the Patrick Sweeney Police Headquarters in Golden Grove. He was charged with domestic violence, aggravated assault and battery.
Sgt. Thomas Hannah Wednesday morning said there was a distinct possibility that Simone's career was over. He said, "We in the Virgin Islands have zero tolerance for domestic violence."
Simone, 31, was only about half way through his first year as a police officer, so he was still on probationary status.
Hannah said if Simone is convicted of a felony, "Any gun he has would be confiscated and he could no longer serve as a police officer."
According to a press release from the department, "As the result of the allegations and arrest," Simone was suspended without pay effective March 1. The matter is under investigation.
