Governor Off-Island for Winter NGA Meeting

Feb. 25, 2005 – Gov. Charles W. Turnbull departed the territory Thursday to attend the 2005 National Governors Association Winter Meeting in Washington, D.C. Saturday, Feb. 26, 2005.
Slated to be among the major topics on the governors meeting agenda are High School Reform, Medicaid and Telecommunications. However, the National Governors Association will also focus on issues such as federal-state early childhood education, health care, information technology and energy policy during the three standing committee sessions. Another priority topic which the Economic Development and Commerce Committee will tackle is the economic development tax incentives of which Governor Turnbull is an active member.
Following the NGA meeting, the chief executive will attend the 2005 Plenary Session of the Interagency Group on the Insular Activities in the South Penthouse at the U.S. Department of the Interior.
During Governor Turnbull's absence, Lieutenant Governor Vargrave Richards will assume the duties as Acting Governor of the Virgin Islands in accordance with the Revised Organic Act of 1954 as amended. Governor Turnbull is expected to return to the territory during the first week of March.
