@Work: Quality Auto Parts

Feb 3, 2005 – Quality Auto Parts has found a comfortable niche on St. Croix, according to Charles "Chick" Hensley, manager and vice president.
His customers include residents, some of whom do their tune-ups and oil changes under the shade tree in the back yard, as well as some of the major car businesses on the island — H & H Tire and Battery and Metro Motors.
He prides himself on Quality Auto Parts' stock. He says, "If you need a part, we have it. If you need 10 parts we probably have them all."
He says his store is a general auto-parts store with parts for domestic and foreign makes. The store also stocks all the chemicals needed to keep a car running and shiny.
Quality Auto Parts's main location is at 6054 Castle Coakley, next to H & H Tire.
The store has been located there for 15 years. A second location was opened at 47A Mars Hill, just outside of Frederiksted, about two years ago. The stores open 8 a.m. every day, except the Mars Hill store does not open on Sunday. The main location is open until 5:30 p.m. on weekdays. The West side store is open until 5 p.m. The main store is open on Saturday until 3 p.m., while the Mars Hill location is open until noon.
Ten people are employed between both stores. Hensley says the employees are knowledgeable and can assist customers in finding the correct part for their repair job.
Hensley says the business tries to help various community charities when the need arises. He says he has made donations to the Women's Coalition, Country Day School and the Dolphin Swim Team among others. Not too long ago the store made a $500 donation to help purchase books for a Frederiksted school.
The store is a member of the St. Croix Chamber of Commerce and Hensley has served on its board of directors.
On the island of St. Croix, tourism affects even the car-parts business. Hensley says, "We do a lot of business with car rental agencies. When they do a lot of rentals, they have to buy more parts."
The Castle Coakley phone is 778-5462. Mars Hill is 719-8780.
