Oct. 15, 2004 – The Planning and Natural Resources Department has put out the call for nominations for its 2004 Coastal Zone Management Awareness Award.
Award categories include person, organization, school and college student.
This is the second year Planning has made these awards.
"It's to bring awareness to the public of all the great environmental stewards we have," CZM public outreach coordinator Lillian Moolenaar said.
The awards will be made at the first annual Coastal Zone Student Ocean Conference to be held Dec. 9 at Gertrude's Restaurant on St. Croix.
No awards were given in 2003.
In 2002, the League of Women Voters of the Virgin Islands Planning and Environmental Quality Committee won the award for its outstanding service in protecting, enhancing and preserving coastal resources. Helen Gjessing of St. Thomas accepted the award for the organization.
Bertha C. Boschulte Middle School on St. Thomas won for rising above the rest in promoting leadership and commitment to the preservation of the marine and coastal environment.
Harry Clinton, head of the Game Fishing Club on St. Thomas, won for outstanding and dedicated service in protecting, enhancing and preserving the coastal resources.
University of the Virgin Islands St. Thomas campus student Devon Tyson won for the implementation of coastal resource studies in the advancement of the CZM program.
The award is open to individuals, organizations, schools, and government agencies. However, if you work for Planning, you and your family members are not eligible.
Individuals, organizations and schools cannot nominate themselves, but must be nominated by someone else.
Nominations are due by 5 p.m., Friday, Nov. 5.
