DPW Says No Dumping of Green Waste Allowed

Oct. 12, 2004 – The dumping of green waste at the territory's bin sites is illegal and
anyone caught violating this law will be cited. This is a reminder from Public Works Department Commissioner Wayne D. Callwood, in a release issued Tuesday.
"Immediately after Tropical Storm Jeanne, the department allowed the public to bring their green waste to the bin sites as a convenience. After ten days, we rescinded that allowance, but residents are still bringing the waste to the bin sites. This is illegal," Callwood said.
Callwood said all green waste is to be reduced to 4-inch pieces and taken directly to the territory's landfills. The department's litter enforcement officers will be patrolling the bin sites, and anyone caught violating this Jaw will be cited. Litter fines can range from $100 to $1,000, depending on the infraction and the decision of the judge, he said.
All waste is to be sorted prior to bringing it to the landfill. Metals and wood cannot be mixed with green waste and household trash.
For more information, contact the Department of Public Works or the landfill in your district.
