Good Hope Seniors Receive National Awards

Oct. 11, 2004 – Senior Issa Ashwash has been awarded the 2004 Harvard Prize Book. This award is given in competition to an outstanding student in the next graduating class who combines excellence in scholarship and high character, combined with achievement in other fields. She was nominated by the GHS administration during his junior year. According to a release from the school, the Harvard Prize Book has, since 1910, been an important and effective way of attracting the attention of talented young people to the opportunities available at Harvard University. It is one of the highest awards a school can obtain for a student.
Senior Abbey Hart is a recipient of the 2004 National Council of Teachers of English Achievement Award in Writing. This is a highly competitive prize. Abbey had to submit samples of her own prose or verse, and also had to write impromptu themes written under supervision. Abbey was chosen among over 3,000 students from the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Canada, Virgin Islands, and the American schools abroad. According to the school, winners of this award are among the best student writers in the country. This is the fourth year in a row that a Good Hope student has been recognized by this organization for excellence in writing. Previous Good Hope winners of this award include: Caitlin Boucher, Kristen Reed, and Meryl Brady. Along with Abbey Hart’s Award, Good Hope School will also receive a certificate of commendation for the GHS English Department.
Senior Paul Jacobs has just been recognized as a scholar by the College Board’s National Hispanic Recognition Program in 2004. He entered the program by taking the PSAT/NMSQT test as a junior. From more than 140,000 Hispanic students nationwide, a select group of 3,400 students have been recognized by the program, based on their scores and further evidence of their academic achievements.
