Oct. 1, 2004 – Work on the wastewater main going through the LBJ Housing Community started Friday.
"Over 200 feet of ductile iron piping will be removed and replaced with PVC piping to replace an existing leak and other areas of deteriorated piping," Wayne D. Callwood, Department of Public Works commissioner, said.
"Prior to the start of the excavating, the LBJ station will be taken offline to allow for the force main to be drained. To perform this work, the department will have to commence pumping over Long Reef on Friday evening. The contractor will be working 24 hours a day, under the supervision of the department, to perform this work as quickly and efficiently as possible to lessen the negative impact on the environment," Callwood said.
In a press release from the department Friday, Callwood apologized to the residents of the housing community for any inconvenience the construction may cause and added he intends to minimize noise pollution in the area during the nighttime hours. Weather permitting, the project is expected to be completed in two to four days.
"Residents with impacted immune systems are advised to avoid the area during this time as the sewage may contain contaminants that will negatively impact one's health. Signs will be posted on the beach reminding people to avoid the Long Reef and adjacent beach areas until the problems are resolved," Callwood concluded.
The department and its contractor, General Engineering Corporation, will be doing the work.
