Aug. 31, 2004 — The Alvin McBean East and Elrod Hendricks West Little Leagues of St. Thomas will play host to the 9th annual Latin American/Caribbean Regional 9-10 Little League Baseball Tournament over the next five days.
Teams from Aruba, the Bahamas, Bonaire, the British Virgin Islands, Curaçao, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Puerto Rico, St. Croix, St. Martin, Sint Maarten. St. Thomas and Venezuela will be converging on St. Thomas on Wednesday to participate in the event.
Play begins on Thursday and goes through Monday. Games are being played at Emile Griffith and Al McBean Ballparks.
According to a release from the hosting teams, a Little League Congress of the participants will convene at 9 a.m. Thursday at Palms Court Harborview Hotel.
At 5 p.m. Thursday, the teams will parade from the Holiday Inn Windward Passage Hotel to the ballpark for the tournament opening ceremonies at Emile Griffith Ballpark. Also taking part in the parade will be mocko jumbies, majorettes, steelbands and clowns, the release stated.
The opening ceremonies, which are scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m., also will include participation by the Virgin Islands Boys Choir, district and regional Little League administrators and local dignitaries.
The first games are set to begin at noon Thursday. A total of 18 games through Saturday will lead up to the semifinals on Sunday and the finals on Monday, with the closing ceremonies and presentation of awards Monday evening. All semifinal and final contests will take place in Emile Griffith Ballpark.
