Family Resource Center Peacemaker Gala Is Aug. 21

Aug. 16, 2004 – This year's Family Resource Center Peacemaker Gala is taking place on St. John – at the Westin Resort on Saturday beginning at 7 p.m.
Receiving the Peacemaker Award this year are Juel T.R. Molloy and the Territorial Court Rising Stars Youth Steel Orchestra, plus a third honoree who won't be announced until Saturday night.
"The Rising Stars are a fine example to our youth," Cynthia Farmer, FRC volunteer coordinator and victim advocate, said, adding that the group will perform at the gala.
Molloy, currently chief of staff to Gov. Charles W. Turnbull, has spent most of her career in public service, including a stint as Human Services commissioner.
The unannounced award recipient will be the individual who makes the largest donation to Family Resource Center as part of its current fund-raising efforts.
The Peacemaker event is a major fund-raiser for Family Resource Center, which began providing crisis intervention, advocacy and community outreach services nearly two decades ago as Women's Resource Center. "We need to care about sisters and brothers who are victims of violence and children who are sexually assaulted," Farmer said.
Tickets to the gala are $100 per person. On St. Thomas they're available at both Modern Music shops, The Draughting Shaft in Havensight Mall, Sweet Kisses in Tutu Park Mall, Sunrise Pharmacy in Red Hook and Vitraco Mall, Quiet Storm in downtown Charlotte Amalie, and the Family Resource Center offices. On St. John, they're being sold at The Palms jewelry store in Wharfside Village.
For attendees from St. Thomas, the ticket price includes the ferry ride from Red Hook to the Westin Resort dock and back. "Look for the balloons on the boat," Farmer said.
She said the ferry will leave Red Hook at 6:15 p.m. An alternative is to take the 6 p.m. public ferry and then a taxi from Cruz Bay to the Westin.
The evening will include dinner, music by DJ Sprauve, a live auction of items including a guest-house stay in Martinique and a silent auction. For more information, call Family Resource Center at 776-3966.
