June 9, 2004 – The Safety Zone's annual fashion show set on June 26 has a new twist this year.
"All the clothes will come from the Phoenix," Safety Zone director Iris Kern said.
The Phoenix is the Safety Zone's thrift store. It carries new and gently-worn clothing and household items all donated by the community to raise funds for the organization.
"The purpose is to show the community the quality of things at the shop," Kern said. The event begins at 8 p.m. at the Marketplace shopping center's second floor public space.
Tickets are $20 each and include hors d'oeuvres, donated by island restaurants, and two complimentary drinks. A cash bar is also available.
Kern said that models include people from all walks of St. John life.
"There's a whole cross section in terms of size, shape, color, and age. Even a couple of pregnant models," she said.
She said the women's clothes range in size from two to 22. The selection also includes men's and children's clothes. It includes sleepwear, swimwear, eveningwear, and professional clothes.
All clothes modeled at the show will be for sale that night.
The Phoenix is located on the dirt road that runs between the Tradewinds building and the side of Santos Laundry. It is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
Kern said that the Safety Zone helps over 200 clients a year. The non-profit agency focuses on domestic violence victims. In addition to its office in Cruz Bay, it operates a women's shelter.
