May 26, 2004 The U.S. Coast Guard Navigation Center and Telecommunications Information System Command in Alexandria, Va. gave 10 computer systems to Charlotte Amalie High School and St. Croix Educational Complex High School.
According to Lt. Alvin Dalmida Jr., Coast Guard coordinator at the Navigation Center, these computer systems were excess government property. Earlier this year, Ivanna Eudora Kean High School received a similar donation.
The U.S. Coast Guards partnership with local schools has involved many educators including on St. Croix counselor Genitta Richards, Educational Complex High School; and on St. Thomas Carmen Howell, vice-principal; counselors Debra Gomez and Shirley Romney, Charlotte Amalie High school; Principal Sharon McCollum-Rogers and Lt. Col. Dave Waller at Ivanna Eudora Kean High School. These educators also answer any questions that students might have about the Coast Guard.
Dalmida added that the Coast Guards partnership has provided five students scholarships to attend the Coast Guard Academy. He concluded a recent press release by saying the computers that were donated should help the schools' effort to address the information age and technology applications.
