Libraries Are in the Major Leagues

May 22, 2004 – The Florence Williams Public Library and the Friends of the Library on St. Croix invite all to "Join the Major Leagues @ Your Library."
The American Library Association, Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association have teamed up on a grand-slam partnership to promote 21st century literacy. The program is sponsored by the Public Library Association, a division of the ALA.
"Join the Major Leagues @ Your Library" features an online baseball trivia game designed to promote libraries and librarians and encourage people of all ages to build their 21st century literacy skills:
— Learning how to read
— Learning how to use computers and other media
— Learning how to find, evaluate and use information
— Learning how to use information to communicate.
The year 2004 marks the third year of the program. It will be promoted at public libraries and ballparks nationwide. One grand-prize winner will win a trip to a designated game of the 2004 Major League Baseball World Series! First-place prizes will be awarded as well.
The trivia questions were developed by librarians at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum and will be available in both English and Spanish for ages 10 and under, 11-13, 14-17, and 18 and over.
More information can be found online.
The "Join the Major Leagues @ Your Library" program is a part of the American
Library Association's Campaign for America's Libraries, a multi-year public education campaign to speak loudly and clearly about the value of libraries and librarians in the 21st century. Major League Baseball is a founding partner in the campaign. The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum is a campaign supporter.
