"Journey through a Cultural Door for Carnival 2004"
The V.I. Carnival Committee has chosen this as the Carnival 2004 theme, submitted by Alma A. Francis. The choice was made from 183 entries, including 10 e-mailed by Francis.
"Freddie's Calypso Kingdom"
Carnival Village is named "Freddie's Calypso Kingdom," honoring Alfred Lockhart Sr., an educator, author, historian, musician, artist and cultural ambassador.
The Cultural (food) Fair has been named "Stanley's Candyland" in honor of Stanley Leonard, who has for decades displayed his mastery of local candies, cakes and pastries.
Health permits and health cards
All participants who will be handling food during Carnival activities must obtain health permits and heath cards, Health Commissioner Darlene Carty said in a release. Owners of food establishments are also reminded to renew their permits, and to post them visibly.
"The Division of Environmental Health will be vigorously conducting inspections," Carty said.
She said health permits are required for anyone planning to sell food at Lionel Roberts Stadium, the Food Fair, the Village, the boat races, J'ouvert, the Children's and Adult Parades and the horse races at Clinton E. Phipps Race Track.
